'TYPEWRITER'
Scene
– Dankworth Manor.
The playwright in this play sits at the side of the stage. The play
is a work in progress, a bit like you are seeing it in the playwright's
head as she is writing it. She therefore has the ability to erase lines,
rewind back to a point in the play and start again, introduce new characters,
etc. What she writes has to happen on the stage.
Dumpling: (To Sandy the Playwright) We are
sick and tired of you constantly rewinding and changing what we do.
All: Yeah.
Dolores: We're sick of you creating and then erasing
us.
All: Yeah.
Janet: And we're sick of being created, only to be
used in the wrong play.
All: Yeah.
Feargal: And if something isn't done to change that,
we'll have to take some action.
Sandy: Don't be ridiculous. You're just fictitious
characters which I've written in a play.
Estelle: Oh, so is that all we are to you? Just some
words on a page.
Sandy: Of course not… I mean… I invented
you all. And you are all each very special to me.
Rose: Are we just? Didn't you plan for Mardi here to
slowly bump us all off, one by one?
Sandy: Well…
Digory: And didn't you write the play so as my car
broke down?
Sandy: Yes but…
Alanis: Just because you invented us, don't go thinking
that you can treat us however you like…
