'Richard
III'
Scene
– England
(London. A street. Enter Richard, Duke of Gloucester, solus)
Gloucester: Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
Grim-visag'd war hath smooth'd his wrinkled front,
And now, instead of mounting barbed steeds
To fright the souls of fearful adversaries,
He capers nimbly in a lady's chamber
But I - that am rudely stamp'd, and want love's majesty,
Have no delight to pass away the time,
And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover
I am determined to prove a villain
(Richard looks on as two citizens enter)
First Citizen: Good morrow, neighbour. Whither away
so fast?
Second Citizen: Hear you the news abroad?
First Citizen: Yes, that the King is dead.
Second Citizen: Ill news. I fear, I fear 'twill prove
a giddy world.
First Citizen: When clouds are seen, wise men put on
their cloaks;
When great leaves fall, then winter is at hand.
