'NO MAN'S LAND'

Scene – in No Man’s Land, an area outside the normal reality of World War II

Demain: (Singing (as a little girl) offstage) Ring a ring a rosy, a pocket full of posy. A tissue, a tissue, we all fall down.
Ras: Stop! Something is not right. Where do you think we are?
Peter: We’re in France…
Will: At the Somme.
Andre: No. We’re at Ypres.
Archie: You’re all nuts – we’re leaving Gallipoli.
Haz: We’re defending Gallipoli.
Alan: I don’t like this…
Archie: What the hell is going on?
Nik: All that I know is that before I came here I was feeling my way through smoke.
Joel: We were escaping a green cloud of gas.
Rajiv: It was dust – we couldn’t see because of the dust.
Mohal: For us it was a blizzard. We couldn’t see more than two feet in front…
(The Stage Manager reveals herself to the assembled soldiers)
SM: All that matters is that now you can see… or can you?
Antony: Where did you come from?
SM: It doesn’t matter where anyone comes from here. You should be more concerned with where you are going.
Mohal: Where are we?
Ivan: How did we get here?
SM: You are in No Man’s Land.

No Man's Land
Set in four separate battles of World War II, opposing soldiers find themselves in ‘No Man’s Land’ – a place outside the normal conventions of time. They discover that differences between them blur and it becomes difficult to establish who is friend or enemy. This is further complicated when they discover a young girl who helps them see their way back to the unreality of reality.
